Chitra Ramaswamy was introduced to classical dance at the age of nine and she found herself drawn to Bharathanatyam and began her education in the Kalakshetra style under the able guidance of her Guru Padmashree Adyar.K.Laksmanan of Chennai. Her guru is one of the foremost disciples of the legendary dance school, Kalakshetra, founded by Shrimathi Rukmani Arundale and it was natural that Chitra imbibed the Kalakshetra style of dance.

Chitra was amazed at her Guru's dedication and devotion to the art and took to it even during her playful young days. Her Guru introduced her to the stage very early and she participated in various dance dramas and presentations. Chitra gave her Arangetram in the premises of Shree Vara Siddhi Vinayakar temple in Besant Nagar, Chennai. She has performed in almost all Sabhas of Chennai including the prestegious "The Music Academy". She has toured various places in India for performances including Solo and dance dramas. Chitra pursued dance avidly even as she was earning a Bachelors degree in Engineering in BITS, Pilani. She has choreographed and performed various pieces in Pilani and Delhi. The themes she chose vary from Hindu mythology, nature to cultural unification. In spite of her busy schedules as a Software Engineer, Chitra continued mastering the complexities and intricacies of this art under the expert tutelage and arduous training of her Guru.

The second phase of Chitra's dance career started when she moved to the USA. She tutored students in Bhrathanatyam and Folk dances while working as an instructor at the “Padmini Institute of Fine Arts", established and run by the renowned actress Padmini. She also choreographed several dances for the institute and has performed with the group. Chitra has played leading parts in the dance dramas staged by other dance companies like Nrithyanjali Institute of Dance, Bharatha Choodamani etc. Chitra is currently the artistic director of “Sanskriti School Of Dance” based at NJ. The school offers programs in Bharathanatyam with the aim of spreading the richness and grandeur of this art form and yet retaining its pureness and tradition.

Chitra is a very graceful and dedicated dancer who has the ability of portraying the character she plays with ardent devotion and grace. Her facial expressions co-coordinated with her intricate footwork and hand movements bring to life the character she portrays.

Chitra's long term goal is to start a school that is "One Point Contact" for Indian fine arts in the USA. She is currently working on a project that depicts the color and variety in Indian dance forms and presentations. She aims at presenting various themes to help the society understand and appreciate art forms and thereby focus on one-ness and unity. Chitra is aiming at presenting themes that will help reach out to the audience and help them understand and appreciate the art better. She also plans to inculcate the precious art to various young students as devotedly and diligently as her Gurus.
